Trump Urges Google to Restore Univision Channels
President Donald Trump recently took to Truth Social, directly appealing to Google and YouTube. He wants them to bring Univision back before the 2026 Midterm Elections, stating, “Google, to FAIRNESS, please let Univision back!”
Newsweek has contacted Google for a response, but has not yet received a comment.
Why This Matters
In September, YouTube TV removed Univision’s Spanish-language networks after contract negotiations fell apart. This impacts access to critically important news and entertainment for a large segment of the U.S. population.
YouTube TV launched in 2017 at $35 per month. Today, the service costs $82.99 monthly, offering a package of local, news, entertainment, sports, and children’s channels.
Univision is the leading Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., reaching audiences through 59 owned or operated stations. The removal also included channels like UniMas, TUDN, Galavision, FOROtv, De Película, De Película Clásico, Bandamax, Telehit, Telehit Música, and TLNovelas.
What You Need to Know
YouTube explained their decision by pointing out TelevisaUnivision’s significant presence on the core YouTube platform. They emphasized that while Univision generates meaningful ad revenue on YouTube itself, it’s viewership on the paid youtube TV service is comparatively small. “TelevisaUnivision has over 160 million subscribers and billions of views across YouTube, where they generate ad revenue from their content. On our paid live TV subscription service, YouTube TV, though, TelevisaUnivision only represents a tiny fraction of overall consumption,” the statement read.
