About the Su-34

The Sukhoi Su-34 (NATO reporting name: Fullback) is a Russian twin-engine, twin-seat, all-weather supersonic medium-range fighter-bomber/strike aircraft. It entered service with the Russian Air Force in 2014 and is based on the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker air superiority fighter.

The Su-34 is designed for tactical deployment against ground and naval targets, capable of operating in both day and night, and under various weather conditions. It is intended to replace the Su-24 tactical bomber and the Tu-22M long-range bomber.

The aircraft features a wider, armored cockpit with side-by-side seating for its two pilots.

Attrition of Russian Aircraft

The loss of the Su-34 brings the total confirmed losses of this aircraft type to at least 40 since 2022, indicating significant attrition within Russia’s tactical aviation fleet.
