Zelensky Warns of Russian Spring Offensive in Donetsk as Prisoner Swap Completes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the frontline region of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine on March 6, 2026, warning that Russian forces are preparing a fresh spring offensive. This comes as Ukraine and Russia completed a two-day prisoner-of-war exchange, returning a total of 1,000 soldiers.
Prisoner Exchange Details
Ukraine and Russia exchanged 500 soldiers each, with the exchange facilitated by agreements reached during recent trilateral negotiations in Geneva with the United States . The US special envoy Steve Witkoff announced the exchange on X (formerly Twitter). The exchange included 300 service personnel on Friday and another 200 prisoners of war the previous day. Two Ukrainian civilians were also returned .

Zelensky’s visit to the Donetsk region included meetings with troops from the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade, the 100th and 24th Separate Mechanized Brigades, and the 36th Marine Brigade . He emphasized the importance of strong defenses in the area, stating that battlefield resilience will shape Kyiv’s diplomatic leverage. The Russian army recorded its slowest advance in nearly two years in February, as Ukraine successfully pushed back in some areas .

Zelensky stressed the geopolitical importance of maintaining a strong position in the east, linking it to the ongoing talks process. He stated, “The stronger we are in the eastern direction, the stronger we are in the talks process” . Donetsk Oblast remains one of the most active front-line regions, with Russian forces concentrating on areas around Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad .
