Toulouse Crush Ulster in Record-Breaking Champions Cup Victory
Toulouse stormed to a convincing victory over Ulster in the Investec Champions Cup, claiming their biggest ever points total in the process with a resounding 61-21 win at Stade Ernest-Wallon.
Early Toulouse Dominance
From the outset, Toulouse dominated proceedings. Matthis Lebel opened the scoring within two minutes with a try in the corner, followed shortly by a powerful effort from Romain Ntamack, set up by a pinpoint pass from Antoine Dupont. Ulster briefly threatened a response through James McCormack’s 12th-minute try. However, Toulouse responded with relentless pressure, with lock Emmanuel Meafou crossing the line before Italy international Ange Capuozzo capped off a flowing attack. Dupont added another try for good measure, leaving Ulster trailing 33-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Ulster Fight Back, But Toulouse Remain Untroubled
Stewart Moore offered a glimmer of hope for Ulster, racing down the field for a try. But Meafou’s second try reinstated Toulouse’s dominance, extending their lead to 40-14 at the break. The game effectively concluded at this point.
Second Half onslaught
The second half continued in the same vein as Toulouse relentlessly attacked. Santiago Chocobares extended the lead with a try from a well-constructed attack and Capuozzo added another, finishing off a delightful move initiated by Dupont’s deft kick. Despite Iain Henderson’s late try for Ulster, the result was never in doubt. Toulouse sealed their comprehensive victory with a penalty try in the final moments, completing a memorable performance.
Toulouse Sets the Standard
With the luxury of substituting their captain, Antoine Dupont, early in the second half, Toulouse demonstrated their depth and quality. The victory sets a clear marker for their aspirations in the Champions Cup, making them a formidable force to contend with.
