US Employs PrSM and Drone Technology in Iran Conflict, Marking Combat Debut

The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has become a testing ground for advanced weaponry, with the U.S. Military deploying the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) and one-way attack drones in combat for the first time. This deployment not only reflects the escalating nature of the conflict but too signals a shift in U.S. Military strategy and technological capabilities.

PrSM’s Operational Debut

U.S. Army units have fired the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) at targets in Iran, marking a “historic first” and demonstrating an “unmatched deep strike capability,” according to Admiral Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) . The PrSM, developed by Lockheed Martin, was first delivered to the U.S. Army in December 2023 .

Patrycja Bazylczyk, associate director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, noted that the operational debut of the PrSM “signals the beginning of a latest chapter of the Army’s strike capability, with significantly increased range and precision.”

Key Features of the PrSM

  • Range: Capable of hitting targets from 60km (37 miles) to more than 499km (310 miles) .
  • Launch Platforms: Compatible with the MLRS M270 and HIMARS family of launchers .
  • Guidance: Utilizes a GPS navigation system for accurate targeting .

Deployment of One-Way Attack Drones

In addition to the PrSM, CENTCOM has confirmed the use of one-way attack drones, employed by its Scorpion Strike task force, for the first time in combat. These drones are part of the Low Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) .

Admiral Cooper revealed that the drones are based on the Iranian Shahed design, which has been widely used by Tehran and Russia. “These drones were originally an Iranian design. We brought them back to the United States, made them better and launched them directly against Iran,” he stated .

Strategic Implications

The use of these advanced weapons systems in a live conflict provides the U.S. Military with valuable data and experience. The PrSM was initially designed to counter China’s anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region . The conflict in Iran offers an opportunity to assess its effectiveness in a different operational environment.

The deployment of these technologies also highlights the evolving nature of modern warfare, with an increasing reliance on precision-guided munitions and unmanned systems.
