A devastating midair collision has claimed multiple lives in Washington D.C. A passenger jet carrying 64 people crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with a military helicopter Wednesday evening. The tragedy unfolded as the Bombardier plane approached Reagan National Airport from Wichita, Kansas, around 9:00 pm ET.

Rescue Efforts Underway Amid Freezing Conditions

Emergency crews are engaged in a large-scale search and rescue operation in the frigid waters of the Potomac, where visibility is low and temperatures hover near freezing. Divers, accompanied by powerful lights, are diligently scouring the wreckage of both the plane and helicopter. Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly reported that over 300 personnel are working in “extremely rough” conditions.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her commitment to the operation, stating, “We’re going to be out there as long as it takes.” Although hope for finding survivors remains, the demanding conditions raise concerns about the possibility of more fatalities.

Witnesses recounted a harrowing scene. Ari Schulman, driving home when he witnessed the collision, described seeing "a stream of sparks" overhead before the plane banked abruptly.

“It looked like a Roman candle," Schulman added, highlighting the alarming nature of the event.

Fatalities Confirmed, Including Russian Figure Skating Champions

US media confirmed that at least 19 bodies were recovered from the wreckage, while multiple outlets reported over a dozen fatalities. According to US Figure Skating, several athletes, coaches, and officials were onboard the flight. Russian officials confirmed the tragic loss of Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, Olympic figure skating champions from 1994, who were among the passengers.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed his condolences, stating, "Unfortunately, we see that these sad reports are being confirmed. Our other fellow citizens were there."

Investigation Underway, President Trump Calls for Air Traffic Control Review

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has grounded all flights at Reagan National Airport, which is expected to remain closed until 11:00 am ET on Thursday. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

In a statement, President Donald Trump expressed his condolences and called for a review of air traffic control protocols following the incident.

“The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“Why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn? Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

The accident has raised concerns about safety in Washington’s crowded airspace and the need for improved safety measures.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom issued a poignant statement expressing the company’s deep sorrow and offering his condolences to the families of those affected.
