Wear OS 7 Launch: Live Updates, New Widgets, and Gemini Integration for Pixel Watches
Google has rolled out Wear OS 7 for Pixel Watch generations 2 through 4, introducing features like “Live Updates,” enhanced media controls, and a 10% improvement in battery life, according to a company announcement.
Live Updates on the Wrist
Wear OS 7 brings “Live Updates” to Pixel Watches, allowing real-time notifications such as sports scores or food delivery status to sync across devices. This feature, first demonstrated at Google’s I/O 2026, ensures users receive critical alerts on both their smartphone and watch, according to Google.
Enhanced Media Controls
The update includes improved media playback controls. Users can now view and manage audio or video playback from their smartphone directly on the watch. For example, switching from speakers to headphones becomes seamless via the watch’s interface, as noted by Google.

New Wear Widgets
Wear OS 7 introduces “Wear Widgets,” customizable tiles that adapt to 2×1 or 2×2 layouts. These widgets function similarly to Android widgets, offering flexibility for apps like weather or calendar, as detailed by Google.
Extended Battery Life and Fitness Tracking
Google claims a 10% increase in battery life compared to Wear OS 6 under normal usage. The update also includes “Wear Workout Tracker,” a native fitness tool that standardizes activity logging, including heart rate monitoring. Partners like Asics Runkeeper are integrated to reduce development workload for app creators, according to Google.
Gemini Intelligence Features Later This Year
While Wear OS 7 focuses on core updates, Gemini Intelligence features—such as voice-activated widget creation and restaurant reservation automation—will follow in 2026. An “AppFunctions API” will enable developers to integrate Gemini into apps, with examples like starting a run via Samsung Health, as outlined by Google.
How to Update Your Pixel Watch
Users can manually initiate the update via the watch’s settings under “System > System Updates.” Disabling Bluetooth during the download process may speed up the installation, as advised by Google.
