Law Enforcement Prepares for World Cup Amidst Trafficking Concerns
Santa Clara County and Bay Area law enforcement agencies are bolstering efforts to combat sex trafficking as they prepare to host matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This proactive approach follows a successful crackdown during Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium, where 29 suspected traffickers were arrested and 73 victims, including 10 minors, were recovered.
Super Bowl Crackdown Yields Significant Results
The Santa Clara County Human Trafficking Task Force led a regional operation involving 67 agencies across 11 Bay Area counties in anticipation of Super Bowl LX on February 8th. The operation resulted in 29 arrests and the recovery of 73 sex trafficking victims . Among the victims was a 12-year-old being trafficked in Oakland .
Specific successes were reported across the region, including 20 victims recovered in San Mateo County, 17 in Contra Costa County and seven in Santa Clara County. Contra Costa County also recorded the highest number of arrests with seven traffickers taken into custody .
Preparing for the World Cup
With Levi’s Stadium set to host six matches between June 13th and July 1st, law enforcement is applying the same regional coordination model used during the Super Bowl to prepare for the influx of visitors expected for the World Cup . Lieutenant Joshua Singleton, task force commander, emphasized that the Super Bowl provided valuable opportunities to strengthen partnerships and refine strategies.
Authorities recognize that major events like the World Cup don’t directly cause an increase in trafficking, but rather create conditions that traffickers exploit, such as increased financial resources and a larger potential victim pool .
Addressing Unique Challenges of the World Cup
The World Cup presents unique challenges compared to the Super Bowl due to the event’s global reach. Millions of international visitors, potentially unfamiliar with U.S. Laws regarding sex solicitation, will be attending the games . To address this, the task force is planning outreach efforts at airports, billboard campaigns, and collaboration with foreign consulates to raise awareness internationally.
Sustaining Efforts Beyond the World Cup
Maintaining the coordinated, multi-agency approach after the World Cup concludes will be a challenge, given potential funding constraints and staffing shortages . Looking ahead, preparations are already underway for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which is expected to draw an even larger international crowd over a longer period.
