Yuhua Place Hawker Centre Stallholder Apologizes for Cleaning Tables with Brush
A stallholder at Yuhua Place Market and Hawker Centre has apologized after a video circulating online showed him cleaning tables with a brush, sparking concerns about hygiene practices. The incident occurred on February 15, 2026, at the Wellcome Food cai fan stall.
The Incident and Public Reaction
A netizen posted videos of the stallholder using a brush to scrub tables and stools. The footage quickly gained attention online, with some viewers expressing concern over the cleanliness of the practice. However, others defended the stallholder, suggesting the brush was solely used for tables and chairs and questioning the need for intervention. One netizen commented, “Maybe the broom was used solely just for table and chairs… What’s the big deal,” even as another stated, “Honestly there is no need to craft life difficult for the cleaner.”
Clarification from the Association and Stallholder
Karney Ngai Ching Kwan, chairperson of the Yuhua Constituency Street 31 Shop-Proprietors &. Hawkers Association, clarified that the individual is not a cleaner but the owner of the Wellcome Food cai fan stall, operating the business with his sister and brother-in-law. The tool used was a long-handled brush purchased specifically for cleaning tables.
The stallholder apologized for his actions and stated he would refrain from using the brush for cleaning in the future. His sister expressed concern about the video being uploaded without full context, fearing it could damage the reputation of the hawker centre and their stall.
NEA Response
The National Environment Agency (NEA) confirmed it had reviewed the video. The stallholder explained to the NEA that he was attempting to clean the tables out of goodwill, noticing they were dirty. The NEA advised him against using a brush to clean tables and chairs and has instructed the association to arrange for cleaning contractors to sanitize the affected surfaces.
