EU Demands Clarity as Trump Threatens New Tariffs
Brussels – The European Union is pressing the United States for clarification regarding its next steps after President Donald Trump announced plans for a new 15% global tariff, despite a recent Supreme Court ruling against his previous tariff measures. The move casts uncertainty over the future of the EU-U.S. Trade agreement reached last summer.
Supreme Court Ruling and Trump’s Response
The situation escalated following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Despite the ruling, President Trump declared his intention to impose a 15% tariff on imports from all countries on Saturday, prompting a strong response from the European Commission. The Commission has requested “full clarity” on Washington’s plans as reported by Politico.
EU Concerns Over Trade Deal
EU officials express concern that Trump’s new tariff is “a clear breach of the deal we had agreed,” according to Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s trade committee as stated in Politico. Lange has proposed postponing ratification of the trade agreement and even suggested the possibility of renegotiating the terms. He described the situation as “pure tariff chaos” and highlighted the growing uncertainty for EU trading partners.
The 2025 Trade Agreement
In July 2025, President Trump and the EU reached a significant trade deal aimed at rebalancing the economic relationship between the two largest economies in the world according to a White House fact sheet. Key components of the agreement included the EU’s commitment to purchase $750 billion in U.S. Energy and invest $600 billion in the United States by 2028. The deal also involved the elimination of EU tariffs on U.S. Industrial goods.
Official Reactions
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič has engaged in discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to address the evolving situation. The European Commission maintains that the current environment is “not conducive to delivering ‘fair, balanced, and mutually beneficial’ transatlantic trade and investment” as reported by Politico.
US Trade Representative’s Stance
The U.S. Trade representative has indicated that the Supreme Court ruling will not unravel existing trade deals as reported by the Stamford Advocate, but the implementation of new tariffs raises questions about the commitment to the agreed-upon terms.
Political Agreement Restores Stability
The agreement reached in August 2025 between Trump and the EU was intended to restore stability and predictability for EU consumers and businesses according to the European Commission. However, the recent tariff announcement threatens to undermine this stability.
