Starlink Disruption Impacts Russian Forces in Ukraine
Elon Musk’s decision to restrict Russian access to Starlink satellite internet has likely disrupted Russian military command and control, limiting their offensive capabilities in Ukraine, though the overall impact on the conflict remains evolving. The move, initiated in early February 2026, has forced Russian forces to rely on less reliable communication alternatives.
The Role of Starlink in the Conflict
Starlink, operated by SpaceX, has become a critical communication tool for both sides of the conflict. For Russian forces, linking drones to Starlink satellites increased their accuracy, extended their range, and made them more difficult to jam. Beyond drone operations, the satellites played a significant role in Russian command and control, facilitating the organization of operations from high-level commanders down to combat units. As a Western military source explained, “All armies that have a little money and need bandwidth leverage Starlink. It’s flexible, it’s not expensive, and it complements military systems that do not allow for increased bandwidth.”
Ukraine’s Response and Starlink Blocking
The decision to block Russian access to Starlink followed a request from Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, after mounting evidence indicated Russian forces were utilizing the service to mount increasingly accurate attacks. Instances included the attachment of Starlink terminals to drones, enabling real-time video links for targeting. SpaceX switched off all terminals operating in Ukraine, except those on a “white list” approved by the Defence Ministry in Kyiv, beginning February 1, 2026.
Impact on Russian Operations
Ukrainian drone operator Giovanni reported that Russian offensive capacity decreased by approximately 50% following the Starlink shutdown. He noted fewer assaults and a reduction in enemy drone activity. Ukraine has exploited this disruption, regaining territory and launching counter-attacks. However, experts note that no dramatic shifts in the conflict have been observed yet.
Russia’s Alternative Solutions
Russia is attempting to mitigate the loss of Starlink by deploying alternative communication systems, primarily utilizing its own Yamal and Express geostationary satellites. However, these satellites are less reliable due to their higher orbit and fewer numbers. These systems require large satellite dishes, making the terminals themselves prime targets for Ukrainian forces, forcing Russia to relocate them frequently.
Attempts to Circumvent the Blockade
Ukrainian security services have reported that Russia attempted to acquire Starlink accounts through Ukrainian citizens, intending to use them for drone operations. This practice is considered a crime punishable by life imprisonment in Ukraine.
