Cuba Kills Four on Speedboat from Florida, Escalating Tensions with US

A confrontation off the Cuban coast has resulted in the deaths of four individuals aboard a Florida-registered speedboat, igniting a diplomatic dispute between Cuba and the United States. Cuban officials claim the speedboat crew opened fire on border patrol, whereas US authorities are investigating the incident to determine the identities and citizenship of those involved.

Confrontation and Casualties

According to the Cuban Ministry of the Interior, the incident occurred approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino canal in Cayo Falcones on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. When approached by a Cuban Border Guard vessel for identification, the occupants of the speedboat allegedly began shooting, injuring the commander of the Cuban boat. Cuban authorities state that in the ensuing confrontation, four people on the speedboat were killed and six others were injured.

Allegations of Terrorist Intent

Cuba alleges the ten individuals on board were Cuban residents of the United States armed with assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, bulletproof vests, and other military-style equipment. The Cuban Ministry of the Interior claims they were attempting to infiltrate the island “for terrorist purposes.” The ministry further stated that most of those involved have prior criminal and violent histories.

US Response and Investigation

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US government is gathering information to ascertain the facts of the incident and determine the citizenship of the victims. Rubio indicated that various US government agencies are working to uncover details not yet provided by Cuban authorities.

Escalating Tensions and US Policy

This incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing tension between the US and Cuba, exacerbated by a Trump-imposed fuel blockade and punitive tariffs on nations trading oil with Cuba. The fuel blockade has led to severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, pushing Cuba’s healthcare system to the brink of collapse and causing widespread blackouts. Aviation has been severely impacted, with foreign airlines cancelling flights to the island. The US has too deployed naval forces to patrol the North Atlantic, attempting to halt oil shipments to Cuba.

Political Reactions

Republican Congressman Carlos Gimenez condemned the Cuban government, alleging they “murdered” Americans. He also issued a threat to Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness following Holness’s call for dialogue between the US and Cuba. Former Florida Senator Marco Rubio has been the subject of social media attention after former President Trump suggested Rubio should become president of Cuba.

Identified Individuals

The Cuban Ministry of the Interior has identified Michel Ortega Casanova as one of those killed. Those arrested include Amijail Sánchez González, Leordan Enrique Cruz Gómez, Conrado Galindo Sariol, José Manuel Rodríguez Castelló, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara, and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra. Duniel Hernández Santos was also arrested on Cuban soil, allegedly sent from the US to assist those on the boat.

The situation remains fluid, and further investigation is needed to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this incident and its potential implications for US-Cuba relations.
