Google Messages Gains ‘Tap to Draft’ Feature for Smart Replies

Google Messages is rolling out a new feature called “Tap to Draft” designed to prevent accidental sending of Smart Replies. This update provides users with an extra step of control before a suggested reply is sent, addressing a common frustration for many users.

What is ‘Tap to Draft’?

Currently, tapping a Smart Reply suggestion in Google Messages instantly sends the message. The new “Tap to Draft” feature changes this behavior. Instead of immediately sending, tapping a suggestion will now populate the message draft, allowing you to review and edit the reply before hitting send. This provides a crucial second step, minimizing the risk of sending unintended messages.

How to Enable ‘Tap to Draft’

The “Tap to Draft” preference is found within the Google Messages settings. Navigate to Messages Settings > Suggestions to find the new option. Users can choose between:

  • Tap to Send: Tapping Smart Replies instantly sends a message. (This is the default setting.)
  • Tap to Draft: Tapping Smart Replies updates your message draft.

Availability

The “Tap to Draft” feature is currently available in beta version 20260303_00_RC00 of Google Messages. It has not yet been released to the stable channel, meaning not all users will have access immediately.

Recent Google Messages Updates

Google has been actively enhancing Google Messages with several new features, including:

  • Find Hub Integration: Integration with airline lost luggage sharing.
  • Scam Detection: Enhanced scam detection capabilities, similarly coming to Samsung’s S26 Phone app.
  • Edit History: The return of edit history for messages.

These updates demonstrate Google’s commitment to improving the messaging experience and adding features that enhance both convenience, and security.
