A year and a half later, when questioned about his progress, Grohl referenced his recent single “Your Favorite Toy,” stating, “I think the lyrics speak for themselves, perhaps more than I can say now,” The Guardian.
Grohl revealed he has been in therapy “days per week for 70 weeks,” totaling over 430 sessions. However, he clarified that the impetus for therapy wasn’t solely the confession of infidelity.
Finding Balance and Addressing Addiction to Success
“I have to be totally honest, writing songs and lyrics about these things is sometimes enough,” Grohl explained. “As for having a deeper, longer conversation about the topic, I continue to reserve much of this stuff for my private life, as impersonal and public as it may seem.” He believes he reached a point where he needed to stop and re-evaluate himself, feeling emotionally pulled in different directions without a sense of balance.
Grohl admitted to a “dangerous” addiction to success, stating, “After reaching a personal goal, a sense of emptiness may come and at that point you think ‘damn, I have to fill it with something else.’” He emphasized that his infidelity wasn’t driven by this emptiness, but rather a failure to address his feelings. “I didn’t stop with myself and I didn’t let the feelings go from my head to my heart. I got to the point where I thought: I have to stop, turn everything off and find my heart again.”
