Astros Pitcher’s Miscommunication Leads too Incident with Catcher
The Houston Astros have found themselves embroiled in controversy, but this time it doesn’t involve stolen signals. A miscommunication regarding signals may have been the root cause of a concerning incident during a game on tuesday, September 2.
Astros’ left-hander Framber valdez allegedly intentionally threw an uncalled pitch at catcher Cesar Salazar, hitting him in the chest.
The issue stemmed from a disagreement over the pitch selection to Trent Grisham. Salazar requested Valdez step off the mound, but Valdez remained on the rubber. Grisham then hit a grand slam, extending the New York Yankees’ lead to 6-0. Just two pitches later, Valdez hit his catcher.
Both Salazar and Valdez have since stated to reporters that the incident was unintentional.
Astros Pitcher Valdez Addresses Incident with Umpire Salazar
The recent on-field exchange between Houston Astros pitcher Framber valdez and umpire Doug Salazar following Tuesday’s game against the New York Yankees has drawn notable attention. Initial reactions suggested a heated disagreement, but both Valdez and Astros leadership have offered explanations.
Following the game, Valdez stated he apologized to Salazar, attributing the incident to a simple misunderstanding. He explained to reporters that he was “crossed up” during a pitch, leading to the confrontation. https://www.usatoday.com/sports/mlb/2023/09/06/astros-framber-valdez-doug-salazar-umpire-incident/70784911007/
Astros General Manager Dana Brown weighed in on Wednesday, suggesting frustration over a grand slam allowed to Trent Grisham likely contributed to valdez’s reaction. “sometimes you get so angry you can’t see straight. and he crossed him up. They had a conversation after the game, and they squashed it,” Brown said. https://www.usatoday.com/sports/mlb/2023/09/06/astros-framber-valdez-doug-salazar-umpire-incident/70784911007/
Manager Joe Espada downplayed the severity of the situation, stating that much of the surrounding speculation was inaccurate. “A lot of that stuff is not true. But I understand the habitat and what comes with it. I appreciate if we could just get past this and go back to just baseball,” Espada commented. https://www.usatoday.com/sports/mlb/2023/09/06/astros-framber-valdez-doug-salazar-umpire-incident/70784911007/
