Pentagon Considers Cutting Ties with Anthropic Over AI Restrictions
The Department of Defense (DOD) is reportedly considering ending its relationship with artificial intelligence company Anthropic due to disagreements over the permissible uses of its AI models. The potential split comes after months of negotiations and could label Anthropic as a “supply chain risk,” a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries, according to reports from The Hill, Forbes, and CNBC.
Disagreement Over “Lawful Purposes”
The core of the dispute lies in the DOD’s demand that Anthropic allow its models, including Claude, to be used for “all lawful purposes.” This encompasses areas such as weapons development, intelligence gathering, and battlefield operations. Anthropic, however, is seeking assurances that its AI will not be employed in the creation of autonomous weapons or for mass surveillance of American citizens, as reported by CNBC and The Hill.
Other AI Companies Complying with DOD Requests
Unlike Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI have reportedly agreed to the DOD’s terms, permitting the use of their AI models for all lawful purposes within the military’s unclassified systems. One company has even extended this agreement to “all systems,” according to a senior DOD official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, as cited by Forbes.
Anthropic’s Previous Operate with the DOD
Despite the current impasse, Anthropic’s Claude model has already been utilized by the U.S. Military. Specifically, it was deployed, through a partnership with data firm Palantir, in the operation to capture former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to the CNBC report and reporting from the Wall Street Journal.
Potential “Supply Chain Risk” Designation
If Anthropic fails to reach an agreement with the DOD, the agency may designate it as a “supply chain risk.” This would require vendors and contractors to certify they do not use Anthropic’s models, potentially significantly impacting the company’s business, as highlighted by Forbes and Fast Company.
Anthropic’s Stance and Recent Funding
Anthropic maintains it is engaged in “productive conversations” with the DOD and remains “committed to using frontier AI in support of U.S. National security,” according to a company spokesperson. This comes after Anthropic recently closed a $30 billion funding round at a $380 billion valuation, more than doubling its worth since September, as reported by CNBC.
