Apple has partnered with artist and designer Bailey Hikawa on a new MagSafe iPhone grip designed with accessibility in mind. Teh $69.95 Hikawa Phone Grip & Stand is available now from the Apple Store, but is listed as a limited edition item.

Designed with Inclusivity in Mind

the grip comes in either Brat green or a speckled stone finish from Apple. Additional color options, including blue and swirly blurple, are available directly from Hikawa’s own store. It’s made from soft-touch silicone and magnetically attaches to the iPhone, functioning as both a grip and a stand for horizontal or vertical viewing.

Apple states the grip was developed “with direct input from individuals with disabilities affecting muscle strength, dexterity, and hand control.” The design aims to “support varied ways of holding iPhone while reducing the effort needed to keep it steady,” according to Hikawa.

A Broader Range of Designs

Hikawa, who was profiled by The Verge in 2019, runs a studio in Los Angeles where she creates distinctive phone cases and other items, including decorative toilet seats.

Positive Reception and Future Plans

“There’s this joy that I feel when somebody says that this is helpful, that they can’t live without it, that it’s cozy in thier hand, that they can’t believe that they have never experienced this,” Hikawa told Elle Decor. “This is the beginning of many more offerings for all kinds of bodies.”

Apple’s Commitment to Accessibility

Apple notes that the new grip is part of a celebration of 40 years of accessibility work at the company. This launch follows a recent collaboration with Issey Miyake on a knitted crossbody phone case, demonstrating Apple’s increasing focus on accessible and innovative accessories.
