ASEAN Focuses on Economic Resilience Amid Middle East Conflict, Investment Certainty
Manila, Philippines – Southeast Asian nations are prioritizing economic resilience and investment certainty as the conflict in the Middle East continues to disrupt global markets, Philippine Trade Secretary Cristina Roque announced Friday. The call for strengthened regional cooperation came during the opening of an ASEAN economic ministers’ meeting in Manila.
Geopolitical Tensions and Economic Shocks
Roque emphasized the interconnectedness of the global economy, stating that geopolitical tensions are no longer distant concerns but “immediate economic shocks.” These shocks manifest in volatile energy markets, disrupted shipping lanes, and shifting investor confidence, according to Roque. She stressed the demand for ASEAN to navigate these global shifts with coordination and foresight, rather than simply reacting to them.
Strengthening Regional Resilience
“Let us ensure that ASEAN remains a region where investment is met with certainty and where cooperation creates genuine opportunity for our people,” Roque said. The Philippines, as the 2026 ASEAN chair, is hosting the summit and related meetings this year. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations comprises 11 nations and represents a rapidly growing economic bloc with a combined population of over 600 million.
Middle East Conflict a Key Discussion Point
The widening conflict in the Middle East is expected to be a central topic of discussion among ASEAN economic ministers. Officials are weighing the impacts of surging oil prices and disruptions to shipping, logistics, and trade flows across the region’s export-reliant economies. Southeast Asian nations, largely dependent on oil imports, face risks of shortages, inflation, and currency volatility.
ASEAN’s Role as an Investment Haven
Roque urged ASEAN to position itself as a safe haven for investment amid increasing global volatility. Strengthening regional resilience is no longer simply an aspiration, but a “primary shield” for the bloc, she stated.
The meeting underscores ASEAN’s commitment to deepening integration and fostering economic stability in a turbulent global landscape.
