BBL 2026-27: Christmas Eve Match and Australia Day Final Confirmed

The Big Bash League (BBL) will return to a Christmas Eve fixture for the 2026-27 season, with the league final scheduled for January 26, according to Cricket Australia (CA). The return of the Christmas Eve match follows the installation of new lights at Melbourne’s Junction Oval, while the choice of Australia Day for the final aligns with the tournament’s broader scheduling requirements around international Test commitments.

The Return of Christmas Eve Cricket

The BBL’s return to Christmas Eve is a strategic move designed to secure a prime-time slot in the Melbourne market. BBL boss Alistair Dobson confirmed that the infrastructure upgrade at Junction Oval was the primary catalyst for the decision.

"It’s been one we’ve been looking at bringing back for a couple of years, and the installation of lights at the Junction Oval just created an opportunity to put a unique event in a new time slot," Dobson told Cricinfo.

To accommodate the match, Cricket Victoria will install temporary grandstands at the venue, aiming to increase capacity to approximately 6,000 spectators. The Melbourne Stars are also set to play a home game at Junction Oval against the Brisbane Heat on December 21, as the MCG will be unavailable due to preparations for the Boxing Day Test.

Scheduling the BBL Final on January 26

The decision to host the BBL final on January 26—a date that holds significant cultural sensitivity in Australia—was driven by the need to avoid scheduling conflicts with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The first Test of that series is scheduled for January 21–25.

According to Dobson, the date was chosen because it "neatly fits around that first test in India" and maximizes the benefits of the public holiday. Cricket Australia has stated it will consult with its Indigenous advisory group regarding the approach to the event. While the date has been synonymous with Australian cricket historically, no BBL matches have been played on January 26 for the past two years.

Managing the International Calendar

The 2026-27 season schedule reflects the challenges of balancing domestic T20 cricket with a packed international calendar. The tournament opener will take place in Chennai, with the Scorchers and Renegades receiving an eight-to-ten-day window to return from India before their second matches.

Test players are expected to be largely absent from the BBL finals, as the Australian team will be involved in a five-Test tour of India beginning January 21, preceded by a four-Test series against New Zealand that concludes on January 8.

Operational Changes and Venue Updates

The upcoming season features several logistical adjustments to accommodate team travel and venue availability:

  • Canberra: The Sydney Thunder will host two matches in the capital, while the Melbourne Stars will no longer host games there.
  • Launceston: The Hurricanes will host one match at the venue following recent redevelopment work.
  • Double-Headers: The schedule includes six double-headers, including two games each on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, with back-to-back double-headers set for the final weekend of the regular season on January 16 and 17.
  • Melbourne Derbies: Both matches between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades will be held at the MCG, including one match starting at the earlier time of 6:05 p.m. to accommodate a wider audience.

While Cricket Australia has explored the possibility of a Christmas Day match, Dobson noted that such a move remains under discussion with the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA). Approval for a Christmas Day fixture is contingent on player well-being and further consultation between the league and the players’ union.
