Browns Break Ground on Brook Park Stadium, Art Modell Law Looms

The Cleveland Browns are moving! On Thursday, the team announced they have officially initiated the process of purchasing a 176-acre site in Brook Park for a new enclosed stadium, dubbed Huntington Bank Field, alongside a mixed-use development. This move comes after months of speculation and negotiations.

“We have executed the clause and taken the necessary steps in our land purchase agreement with the current owners to solidify our future purchase of the 176-acre site in Brook Park for a new Huntington Bank Field enclosed stadium, along with an adjacent mixed-use development,” said Dave Jenkins, COO of Haslam Sports Group. “While work remains with our public partners on the project, this is a key step in our efforts to create a responsible long-term stadium solution that delivers a world-class experience for our fans, attracts more large-scale events for our region and positively impacts our local economy.”

The Art Modell Law Casts a Shadow

However, the Browns’ plans aren’t without hurdles.

The City of Cleveland has warned the team over attempts to leave the city, invoking the “Art Modell Law.” This controversial legislation, enacted in response to the Cleveland Browns’ 1995 relocation to Baltimore, could potentially force the Haslams to sell the team if they move it.

The Haslams have already filed a lawsuit seeking “clarity” on the law’s application in hopes of navigating a path that doesn’t involve a forced sale.

The most important clause in Jenkins’ statement might be this: “Work remains with our public partners.” This suggests the Browns need agreement with the city to move forward, and the Art Modell Law hangs over the process like a dark cloud.

The Future of the Browns Remains Uncertain

Ultimately, the Browns’ future hinges on finding a way out of Cleveland without triggering the Art Modell Law. The Brook Park stadium project is a promising step, but it’s ultimately tied to the outcome of their legal battle with the city.

Only time will tell if the Browns can find a solution that satisfies both their ambitions and the desires of their loyal fans in Cleveland.
