China Condemns Middle East Conflict, Urges Restraint and US-China Cooperation
BEIJING – China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi strongly condemned the escalating conflict in the Middle East on Sunday, March 8, 2026, stating the war “should never have happened” and calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Wang emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions and warned against a return to a “law of the jungle” dominated by military force.
Escalation of Conflict
The current crisis began on February 28th with strikes conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US interests, primarily in the Gulf region. Further complicating the situation, Israel has launched retaliatory attacks in Lebanon following rocket and drone fire from the Iran-aligned Hezbollah militia across the border.
China’s Position and Concerns
Beijing has consistently criticized both US and Israeli military actions in Iran, with which it maintains diplomatic and trade relations. Wang Yi reiterated this stance, specifically condemning the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He argued that resorting to force will only exacerbate hatred and create novel crises, advocating for all parties to return to the negotiating table and resolve their differences through dialogue.
