Cuban Border Patrol Confrontation Leaves Four Dead
Four people were killed and six injured in a shootout between Cuban border patrol troops and the crew of a speedboat registered in Florida on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. The incident occurred near Cayo Falcones, in the Villa Clara province of Cuba.
Details of the Confrontation
According to a statement from Cuba’s Ministry of the Interior (MININT), the Florida-registered speedboat approached within one nautical mile of the El Pino channel. Cuban authorities allege that the crew of the speedboat opened fire on the border patrol vessel, wounding the commander. MININT reported that Cuban forces returned fire, resulting in four deaths and six injuries on the speedboat.
Heightened Tensions with the U.S.
This incident occurs amid escalating tensions between the U.S. And Cuba. Recent actions by the U.S., including the military operation in Venezuela authorizing the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro, have raised concerns in Havana. Following the Venezuela operation, U.S. Officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, suggested the potential for similar action in Cuba. The U.S. Has as well imposed economic sanctions, including cutting off supplies of Venezuelan money and oil to Cuba and enacting an oil blockade.
History of Similar Incidents
This is not the first instance of a violent confrontation between Cuban authorities and vessels approaching the island. Cuba has a history of engaging in shootouts with boats accused of violating its territorial sovereignty. Similar incidents were reported in June 2022, resulting in injuries and one death. The Cuban government consistently frames these actions as necessary to protect its territorial integrity and stability.
Ongoing Investigation
An investigation into Wednesday’s incident is currently underway. The identities of those on board the speedboat and their purpose remain unknown. The Cuban Ministry of the Interior has stated its commitment to defending Cuba’s national sovereignty. U.S. Congressman Carlos Gimenez has called for an immediate investigation into the incident.
