A woman in Jakarta, identified as Khairun Nisa, recently fabricated a career as a flight attendant after falling victim to a fraudulent employment scheme.According to authorities, Nisa initially traveled from Palembang to Jakarta with the intention of pursuing legitimate flight attendant training.

Police Commissioner Yandri Mono, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police, stated that Nisa was approached by an individual who falsely promised her a position as a flight attendant in exchange for a payment of IDR 30 million (approximately $1,900 USD). After transferring the money, Nisa was unable to contact the perpetrator, realizing she had been scammed.

Rather of admitting the deception, Nisa resorted to impersonating a flight attendant, creating and sharing fabricated posts on social media to maintain the illusion for her family. “Because she was embarrassed and didn’t want to disappoint her mother who helped her in the process, she admitted to her family that she was already working,” Commissioner Yandri explained.”She also posted on social media so her parents knew she was a flight attendant.”

Fraudulent Schemes Targeting Aspiring Flight Attendants

This incident highlights a growing concern about scams targeting individuals seeking employment in the aviation industry. Authorities are urging prospective flight attendants to exercise caution and utilize only official recruitment channels.”For people who want to become flight attendants, don’t use or go through irresponsible people, by giving a certain amount of money you can continue to make promises.Just follow the existing SOP rules,” Commissioner Yandri advised.

Protecting Yourself from Employment fraud

here are some key steps to avoid falling victim to similar scams:

  • Verify recruitment Agencies: Ensure any agency you work with is officially recognized and accredited.
  • Avoid upfront Fees: Legitimate airlines and recruitment agencies typically do not require candidates to pay upfront fees for training or placement.
  • Research thoroughly: Investigate the reputation of any individual or company offering employment opportunities.
  • trust Official Channels: Apply directly through the airline’s official website or verified recruitment events.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the fraudulent individual who targeted Nisa, and are reinforcing the importance of vigilance against such deceptive practices. Individuals seeking to verify the legitimacy of a flight attendant recruitment process can contact their local law enforcement agency or refer to official guidelines provided by aviation authorities.
