Berlin’s Görlitzer Park to Implement Nighttime Closure with New Fencing
A controversial security measure is underway in berlin’s Kreuzberg district, with the installation of fencing around Görlitzer park.As of Wednesday, November 6, 2025, a 300-meter section of the barrier is in place along Wiener Strasse, and the first gate equipped with a turnstile has been erected at the intersection of Görlitzer Straße and Görlitzer Ufer.
The project aims to entirely enclose the park by december, with a planned closure period from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly. Authorities anticipate the addition of further turnstiles to regulate access. The move has sparked debate regarding public space, security concerns, and the impact on the park’s diverse community.
The decision to fence and restrict access to Görlitzer Park follows ongoing discussions about drug-related crime and public safety within the area. Local officials state the measures are intended to curb illegal activities and improve the overall safety and well-being of park visitors and nearby residents. However, critics argue that the fencing will negatively impact the park’s open and inclusive atmosphere and may displace, rather then resolve, underlying issues.
