Lake Como Rescue: Tourists Saved from Sudden Storm
Lecco, Italy – July 5, 2025 – A swift and coordinated rescue operation unfolded today on Lake Como, as emergency services saved five young Chinese tourists caught off guard by a rapidly developing storm. The incident underscores the potential dangers of unpredictable weather conditions on the lake, a popular destination attracting millions of visitors annually.
Unexpected Weather Turns Recreational Outing Perilous
The group of tourists were enjoying a morning of recreation on stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) near Moregallo Long, along the western shore of the Lecco branch of Lake Como. Unaware of the approaching inclement weather, they were enjoying the calm waters when a severe thunderstorm descended upon the region, impacting a large portion of Lombardy.
According to meteorological reports, the storm brought torrential rainfall and generated important wave activity, accompanied by powerful gusts of wind. These conditions quickly overwhelmed the tourists, causing them to lose their balance and fall into the lake. Battling the turbulent water, they managed to swim towards the shoreline, desperately seeking refuge by grasping onto the rocky embankment.Their hold, however, was precarious, and it was clear they couldn’t maintain their position for long.
Joint Response from Emergency Services
Fortunately, a proactive safety patrol was already underway. The Lecco Nautical Team of the fire department, participating in the “Safe Lario” operation – a collaborative initiative focused on water safety – was in the vicinity. Responding instantly, they launched a rescue effort alongside ground crews from the Lecco provincial fire command and volunteer firefighters from Valmadrera. The Carabinieri’s naval service unit from the Province of Lecco also contributed to the operation.It was noted that not all individuals in the group were wearing personal flotation devices (PFDs), highlighting the importance of safety equipment during water activities. The rescue teams efficiently located and brought the tourists to safety, transferring them to a secure location once their condition was stabilized. The operation was completed under challenging circumstances,with ongoing adverse weather conditions posing significant difficulties.
