Flu Epidemic in the Netherlands Declines, But Remains Present

After four weeks, the flu epidemic in the Netherlands appears to be waning, with fewer individuals seeking medical attention for flu-like symptoms. However, health authorities emphasize that the virus continues to circulate and remains a concern, particularly for vulnerable populations.

Peak Likely Passed

Recent data from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the research institute Nivel indicate a decrease in GP visits for flu-like complaints. Last week, 66 per 100,000 people consulted their doctor for these symptoms, down from 71 the previous week and 68 the week before Nltimes. Laboratory tests also reveal a slight decrease in the presence of the flu virus, with approximately 40 percent of samples testing positive in the most recent week, compared to over 50 percent the week prior Nltimes.

Continued Circulation and Vulnerable Groups

Despite the downward trend, the RIVM stresses that the influenza virus is still widely circulating. The majority of individuals with the flu recover at home, but a smaller, more vulnerable segment of the population continues to require medical care. This includes those over 60, individuals with respiratory conditions, and people with diabetes Nltimes.

Flu Activity Earlier in the Season

The annual flu epidemic seemed to be starting in February, with a significant percentage of people experiencing respiratory symptoms testing positive for the influenza virus RIVM. In early February, the number of people contacting their GP with flu-like symptoms rose to 51 in 100,000 inhabitants, exceeding the threshold for increased flu activity of 46 in 100,000 RIVM. The flu virus was found in 13% of samples taken from individuals with respiratory symptoms, increasing to 37% in samples taken by GPs RIVM. Laboratory reports also showed an increase, rising from 18% to 22% RIVM.

Vaccine Effectiveness

While some circulating variants of the flu virus differ slightly from those targeted by this season’s vaccine, the RIVM reports that the vaccine remains effective, performing similarly to previous years, based on international studies including Dutch data Nltimes.

Impact on Healthcare

The recent surge in flu cases led to increased crowding in hospitals, resulting in the cancellation of planned operations in several locations, including Leeuwarden, Amersfoort, Dordrecht, and Den Bosch Nltimes.
