Flu Vaccine Appeal and Hospital Pressure in ireland
Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has appealed to “everybody who can” to get the flu vaccine, while confirming that adults between 18 and 59 who are not in at-risk groups will not receive the jab for free. The appeal comes as Ireland experiences a notably severe strain of influenza.
severe Flu Strain and Impact on Children
Speaking on RTÉ Radio on Sunday, Minister MacNeill stated that the circulating flu strain is “very severe” and especially virulent among children. She highlighted the increased pressure on Children’s Health ireland (CHI),noting that they currently have children on trolleys – an unusual situation. This is a direct consequence of the widespread viral infection.
Vaccine Availability and Uptake
The flu vaccine is currently free for the following groups:
- Children aged 0 to 17 years
- Individuals 60 years or older
- Pregnant women
- Individuals with underlying health conditions
- Healthcare workers
Uptake among children currently stands at 21%, an increase from last year’s 17%, but still insufficient. Some batches of the nasal spray vaccine for children have expired due to the low initial demand. However, the Minister assured the public that additional supplies with later expiry dates (January or February) are available, and more will be accessible in the coming weeks. Where the nasal vaccine is unavailable, children can receive the vaccine via injection.
Hospitalization Rates and Vaccination Effectiveness
Data indicates that three-quarters of individuals hospitalized with the flu had not been vaccinated. Minister MacNeill emphasized the importance of vaccination, noting that it takes approximately 10 days to achieve full protection. She anticipates the peak of the flu season to occur over Christmas and extend into January.
Cost and Access to the Vaccine
Responding to calls from the Labor Party to make the vaccine free for all adults, the Minister explained the need to prioritize resources for the most vulnerable populations. She stated that extending free access to everyone would necessitate cuts in other essential healthcare services. The vaccine costs between €30 to €35 for adults outside of the eligible groups.
Healthcare Worker Vaccination Rates
The uptake of the flu vaccine among healthcare workers remains a concern, currently at just 29% – significantly below the target of 75%. The vaccine is free for healthcare workers, and clinics are available on-site at some facilities. The Minister urged healthcare professionals to get vaccinated to protect their own health and reduce transmission within healthcare settings.
Measures to Reduce Hospital Pressure
To alleviate pressure on hospitals, GPs are receiving funding to extend opening hours for respiratory conditions.Hospitals are also implementing weekend discharge programs to facilitate patient flow from emergency departments (EDs) to wards.
Improved Hospital Situation Compared to Last Year
Despite the current flu surge, the situation in Irish hospitals is significantly improved compared to last year. Currently, 180 people are on trolleys across 29 hospitals, a ample decrease from the 600 reported this time last year. This improvement is attributed to changes in working practices and the dedication of healthcare staff.
