AI Pioneer Says Skip the Ph.D. to Break into the Field

AI researchers are incredibly sought after. Meta has even offered some billion-dollar compensation packages in the heat of the ongoing AI talent wars.

But surprisingly, one AI pioneer isn’t convinced a higher degree is the best path. Jad Tarifi, who founded Google’s first generative AI team after earning his Ph.D., doesn’t recommend pursuing advanced study to enter the field.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, Tarifi, 42, predicted that many of AI’s current challenges will be resolved within the five to seven years it takes to complete a Ph.D.

“Even applying AI to robotics will likely be solved by then,” Tarifi told BI.

Tarifi believes a Ph.D. is really only for those deeply “obsessed” with a specific area, as higher education demands notable dedication and at least five years of intense work. He describes it as requiring “a lot of pain.”

His advice? Avoid the Ph.D.route altogether, or focus on emerging AI subfields like AI for biology. These areas are still in their early stages and offer more chance.
