Google Maps Gets an AI-Powered Upgrade with Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation
Google Maps is undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of Gemini AI and the launch of Immersive Navigation, promising a more intuitive and informative navigation experience. These updates, announced on March 12, 2026, represent Google’s largest overhaul of the app’s driving experience in over a decade.
Ask Maps: A Conversational Approach to Navigation
The new “Ask Maps” feature leverages the power of Gemini AI to allow users to ask complex, real-world questions using natural language. Google states this capability enables the app to answer questions “a map could never answer before.” Examples include inquiries like, “My phone is dying–where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” or “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?”
Ask Maps personalizes responses based on a user’s search history and saved locations. For trip planning, users can ask broader questions, such as, “I’m headed to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes–any recommended stops along the way?” The app will then provide directions, estimated travel times, and recommendations from other users. TechCrunch reports that the feature can build a trip itinerary using information from over 300 million places, including user reviews.
Ask Maps is currently available in the U.S. And India on Android and iOS, with a desktop version planned for release soon. MacRumors confirms this rollout schedule.
Immersive Navigation: A 3D View of the Road Ahead
“Immersive Navigation” introduces a detailed 3D map that displays buildings, overpasses, and terrain, providing drivers with a more realistic and informative view of their surroundings. Google highlights that the update showcases essential road details like lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs.
This visual overhaul is powered by Gemini models, which analyze real-world imagery from Street View and aerial photos to create an accurate representation of the route. The app also provides smart zooms and transparent buildings to give drivers a broader view of their route and prepare for upcoming maneuvers. Voice guidance has been improved to sound more natural, aiming to provide directions “like a friend.”
Immersive Navigation also provides real-time alerts about route disruptions and informs drivers about trade-offs for alternative routes, such as longer trips with less traffic or faster routes with tolls. Drivers can visualize their destination with Street View imagery and receive parking recommendations. The app will also highlight building entrances and street positioning upon arrival.
Immersive Navigation is currently rolling out in the U.S. And will be available on eligible iOS and Android devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in. AP News reports the initial availability is on Google Maps’ mobile app for iPhone and Android.
The Future of Navigation
These updates to Google Maps demonstrate a clear shift towards AI-powered, conversational navigation. By combining the app’s extensive mapping data with the capabilities of Gemini AI, Google is aiming to create a more seamless and intuitive experience for drivers and travelers alike. The integration of 3D visuals and real-time information promises to enhance situational awareness and reduce stress while on the road.
