David Ayer Steps Back From ‘Suicide Squad’ Campaign to Support James Gunn’s DC Universe
Director David Ayer is taking a step back from fan-led campaigns to release his cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad in support of James Gunn’s expansive DC Universe.
The director’s appreciation for Gunn and his vision became publicly clear when he asked fans to hold off on their campaign following the Creature Commandos announcement and the impending release of the Superman trailer.
A Tribute to Optimism
On X (formerly Twitter), Ayer expressed his admiration for Gunn, stating, “As a film makers I want to support other film makers. I’m excited to see the trailer and have heard through the rumor mill it’s pretty incredible.” He even defended his decision to support Gunn, saying, “My Lord. If supporting another film maker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point. When I was a kid, I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comic books. They held me and gave me company when no one else did. Batman spoke to my injured soul. Superman’s optimism was an example how to see the world without darkness.”
The Truth Will Out
While Ayer acknowledges the fervent interest in his cut of Suicide Squad, he believes its time will come. He’s previously stated, “It’s coming. Something’s going to happen. Something’s going to be revealed. The truth always comes out. It always comes out.” He has also confirmed speaking with Gunn about the release of his version, remarking “Gunn told me it would have it’s [sic] time to be shared.
