Morotai Island to Turn into Hub for Regional Security Cooperation
Morotai Island, a historically significant location in North Maluku province, Indonesia, is poised to become a key site for expanded security cooperation between Indonesia, Australia, Japan, and Papua New Guinea (PNG). The development, announced on March 12, 2026, builds upon a recent security treaty between Indonesia and Australia and existing defense pacts involving Australia, Japan, and PNG.
Historical Significance of Morotai Island
Morotai Island played a crucial role during World War II as a strategic base for Allied Forces, particularly the United States and Australia, from 1944 to 1945. The Battle of Morotai, fought between September 15 and October 4, 1944, saw Allied forces secure the island, utilizing its airstrips to launch attacks against Japanese forces in the Philippines, and Borneo. The island’s Doroeba Plain, one of its few lowland areas, was particularly significant for the construction of these airfields.
Expanding Security Partnerships
Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin revealed plans for trilateral security arrangements involving Indonesia, Australia, and Japan, as well as separate arrangements between Indonesia, Australia, and PNG, following a meeting with Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles. This expansion of cooperation includes increased intelligence sharing and the potential development of a joint military training facility on Morotai Island.
Joint Training Facility on Morotai
According to reports from Indonesian news outlet Kompas.com, the proposed facility on Morotai would leverage existing defense structures from World War II, upgrading them for joint use by Indonesian and Australian forces. Access to the facility may too be extended to military personnel from the Philippines, Singapore, and other nations, alongside a similar facility being developed with Singapore in North Kalimantan province.
Recent Security Agreements
These developments follow a series of recent security agreements in the region. In February 2026, Indonesia and Australia signed a “Treaty on Common Security” committing both sides to joint military training and increased cooperation. Australia also signed a mutual defense pact with Papua New Guinea in October 2025 and a treaty with Japan in 2022 to enhance military engagement and interoperability.
Looking Ahead
The planned security cooperation and the development of the Morotai Island facility underscore a growing commitment to regional stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The revitalization of a historically significant site for modern security purposes highlights the evolving geopolitical landscape and the importance of collaborative defense initiatives.
