IAEA Warns of Radiological Risks at Iranian Nuclear Facilities Amid Regional Tensions
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed serious concerns regarding the safety and security of Iran’s nuclear facilities amid ongoing regional conflicts, warning that a “possible radiological release with serious consequences” cannot be ruled out. Despite having “no indication” that any Iranian nuclear installations have been directly damaged by recent strikes , the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi is urging all parties to exercise “utmost restraint.”
Escalating Concerns and Attacks on Nuclear Sites
Attacks on Iranian nuclear sites have led to a “sharp degradation in nuclear safety and security” within the country . Specifically, the Natanz enrichment site has been targeted, with initial attacks on June 13th destroying electricity infrastructure, including substations and power supplies. Damage was also inflicted on both above-ground and underground cascade halls at the Natanz Pilot Fuel Enrichment Plant . While radioactivity levels outside the site remain normal, contamination exists within the Natanz facility itself.
Uranium Stockpile Remains a Concern
Despite previous strikes, a significant stockpile of uranium remains in Iran. As of February 19, 2026, Iran possesses approximately 972 pounds of uranium enriched to 60% purity, bringing it close to weapons-grade levels . Grossi stated that “most of the material that Iran had accumulated…is still there, in large quantities” .
Communication Challenges and Calls for Diplomacy
The IAEA is currently unable to verify whether Iran has suspended all uranium enrichment . Efforts to contact Iranian nuclear regulatory authorities have been unsuccessful . Grossi has repeatedly called for a resumption of diplomatic negotiations “as quickly as possible” and urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid further escalation .
Potential Consequences of a Radiological Release
Grossi warned that a radiological release could necessitate the evacuation of areas as large or larger than major cities . He emphasized the urgency of reestablishing communication with Iranian authorities to monitor the situation effectively.
