Jony Ive‘s AI Device Faces Hurdles at OpenAI

in 2023,it was known that Jony Ive,the legendary designer who defined Apple’s aesthetics for more than two decades,was collaborating with OpenAI in the development of a device driven by artificial intelligence. The news was confirmed at the beginning of 2025, when openai announced the acquisition of Ive’s startup, called “LoveFrom,” for $6.5 billion (approximately €6.1 billion). And, from what it seems, there are problems advancing as expected.

A Device without a Screen That Raises Great Challenges

According too reports, the most advanced device in this collaboration is a device of the hand palm size, without a screen, designed to capture audiovisual signals of the environment and facilitate interaction with the user. The idea is to work as a personal assistant always active,capable of listening,observing,and responding in a contextual way. But this approach is generating complications, especially in the field of software and infrastructure, rather than in physical design.

This suggests that the jony Ive team,focused on aesthetics and user experience,is not mainly responsible for current problems. Difficulties are concentrated on how to provide the device with an adequate personality, guarantee user privacy, and, above all, have the work capacity necessary for the system to function fluidly under real conditions.

The Most Relevant Technical Challenges

• Insufficient processing capacity: OpenAI is having problems scaling the infrastructure that powers ChatGPT, and even more so to support a physical device that works continuously. As explained by a source close to Ive, “Amazon has the capacity for Alexa, Google for its Home devices, but OpenAI still struggles to get enough calculation power for ChatGPT, and much more for a physical device. That is the first thing they must solve“.
