A slump in Las Vegas tourism is having a significant impact on the area’s hospitality industry.

Service workers tell News 3 they have seen a drop in foot traffic along the Las Vegas Strip, which is hitting workers’ pockets hard. Many rely on tips to make ends meet.

Sebastian Espinoza, who works as a busser at Caesars Palace on an “on call” basis, said money is good when he hears the phone ring to pick up a shift, but those calls are rare this year.

He’s applied to other jobs with no luck, even though he has nearly a decade of hospitality experience.

“I was think of buying a home and starting a family with my girlfriend,” Espinoza said. “That’s on hold for now as I continue to see money escape my pockets.”

His fellow workers also seeing the impact. Nightlife foot traffic has seen a decline.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Southern Nevada has seen a 7% decrease in tourism. There’s also been an approximately 18% drop in the number of flyers from Canada.

“This is a part of the ‘Trump slump,'” Espinoza said. “This was not like this last year.”

He added that the idea of “no tax on tips” does not make sense if there is no one to tip.
