Berlin (dpa) – In Cannes this film received split reviews, but ultimately it was awarded. Now “Sirât” of the Frenchman Oliver Laxe starts in Germany. The spiritual road movie is full of excitement and for the large cinema screen – with impressive 16mm images and a driving soundtrack.

A trip through the Moroccan desert

The thriller tells of a father who travels through the Moroccan desert with his son to find the disappeared daughter. They suspect them at a techno festival in Morocco. In search of you, you will meet a few ravers to join them.

In an old bus and converted vehicles, make your way to a new illegal party in the desert. During the arduous journey, a community develops between the party goers and the family. But then a tragic accident happens.

“Sirât” inspires with a visual force and great sound landscape. Sun, dust, skin and textures literally reach into the picture. The impressive, apocalyptic desert pictures sometimes remind of “Mad Max” or “Dune”, even if Laxes film is more arthouse than action blockbuster. The consistently exciting film about what community and foreignness means.

Sandstorms and other crises bring crew to their limit

In an interview with “Variety”, the 43-year-old director told about the challenging filming. “We shot in Morocco from May to July – at the worst season,” said Laxe. «Sandstorms, intensive heat, broken lenses, scenes that we had to turn again. The crew has brought the crew to its limits. I myself had to deal with personal crises during this time, felt alienated. But that is exactly what has been incorporated into the emotional texture of the film. »

Some spectators criticized the film after his premiere at the film festival in Cannes to pursue some unrealistic plot strands. But the jury was able to convince Laxe.

He shares his award with the prize of the jury with the Berliner Mascha Schilinski, who was honored for “looking into the sun”. This film comes to the cinema on August 28th.
