Mojtaba Khamenei Assumes Iranian Supreme Leadership, Declares Victory Over Enemies

Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been named his successor as war continues in the region. In a message released on the occasion of the Persian New Year, Khamenei declared that enemies of the Islamic Republic had been “defeated.”

Succession Amidst Conflict

Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment, announced by Iranian state TV on Sunday, March 16, 2026, comes after his father’s death in an airstrike on February 28, 2026, as part of Israel’s Operation Epic Fury . He had long been considered a contender for the position, despite never holding an elected or appointed government role .

Claims of Victory and Regional Stability

In his statement, published on his Telegram channel and in official Iranian media, Khamenei stated, “At this moment, thanks to the unity that has been forged among you, our compatriots—despite all the differences in your religious, intellectual, cultural and political origins—, the enemy has been defeated.” He likewise asserted that Iran was not responsible for recent attacks in Turkey and Oman, attributing them instead to Israel .

Narrow Escape from Attack

Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei narrowly escaped the Israeli missile strike that killed his father and wife, Haddad. According to leaked audio from an internal Iranian meeting, he had stepped outside the compound moments before the attack . Mazaher Hosseini, head of protocol for the late leader’s office, reportedly detailed how Khamenei went outside briefly and was heading upstairs when the missiles struck .

Ongoing Conflict and Previous Clashes

Khamenei characterized the current conflict as the third war experienced by the Islamic Republic in the past year, following a 12-day conflict with Israel in June 2025 and nationwide protests earlier this year, which Tehran blamed on Israel and the United States .

Concerns Over Khamenei’s Health

Almost two weeks after assuming office, Mojtaba Khamenei has not yet appeared in public through video or audio messages. State media and officials suggest he may have been injured in the same attack that killed his father .
