Netherlands Set to Reduce Gas Dependence Amid Global Energy Volatility
The Netherlands is poised to significantly decrease its reliance on natural gas, potentially reducing consumption by a further third within five years. This development comes as global conflicts continue to disrupt energy markets and drive up prices, highlighting the nation’s vulnerability to international energy crises.
NVDE’s Emergency Plan for Gas Reduction
The Dutch Association for Sustainable Energy (NVDE) has outlined a comprehensive ‘Emergency Plan for less natural gas,’ proposing nineteen measures to lower Dutch gas consumption from 30 billion to 20 billion cubic meters annually within the next five years. The plan focuses on accelerating home and business insulation, expanding heating networks, enhancing sustainability in greenhouse horticulture, and promoting flexible electricity usage.
Geopolitical Risks and Energy Security
NVDE Chairman Olof van der Gaag emphasized the Netherlands’ susceptibility to global events, stating, “Every time a conflict breaks out somewhere in the world, the energy bill of Dutch families and companies skyrockets.” While the Netherlands currently sources limited gas directly from the Middle East, the ongoing conflict in the region is impacting global supply and driving up prices as Asian countries compete for liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments, particularly from the United States.
Van der Gaag cautioned that a significant portion of the Netherlands’ gas supply originates from unstable regions, including the US, and expressed concern about potential disruptions. “We do not know how long this conflict in the Middle East will last. A large part of our gas comes from the United States via LNG. No one knows when President Trump will get mad and put pressure on the gas supply to Europe. We are really extremely vulnerable.”
Progress Made Since the Ukraine War
Following Russia’s curtailment of gas supplies to Europe in response to support for Ukraine, the Netherlands successfully reduced its annual gas consumption from 40 billion to 30 billion cubic meters. This reduction was achieved through a combination of measures, including energy conservation efforts and a shift towards sustainable energy sources.
Focus on Sustainable Solutions
The NVDE advocates for increased subsidies for home and business insulation, streamlined permitting processes for sustainable energy projects, and rejects proposals like reopening gas fields in Groningen or simply lowering energy bills as short-term fixes. Van der Gaag argues that such measures are merely “symptom control” and would keep the Netherlands tethered to a vulnerable and polluting energy system.
Current Energy Prices in the Netherlands
As of March 12, 2026, electricity prices in the Netherlands show significant fluctuation throughout the day. According to kwhprice.eu, prices range from a minimum of -0.0004 €/kWh to a maximum of 0.1492 €/kWh. The average price for the day is 0.0685 €/kWh. Natural gas prices are also subject to change, with the average price in February 2025 being 0.6454 EUR/m3, according to CBS.
Looking Ahead
The Netherlands’ commitment to reducing gas consumption and transitioning to sustainable energy sources is crucial for enhancing its energy security and mitigating the impact of global geopolitical instability. The NVDE’s plan provides a roadmap for achieving these goals, but its success will depend on continued investment, policy support, and public engagement.
