Deep beneath Oregon’s snow-capped Cascades, a discovery has reshaped the understanding of available water resources. Scientists at the University of Oregon have unveiled a colossal aquifer, potentially the largest in the United States, lurking beneath the volcanic landscape. This hidden underground reservoir could hold a staggering 81 cubic kilometers of water, equivalent to four times the volume of Crater Lake.
The find, published in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, wasn’t a direct target. Initial drilling efforts, spearheaded by earth scientist Leif Karlstrom, were focused on geothermal energy exploration. However, the scientific team, comprised of researchers from various universities, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Geological Survey, stumbled upon something extraordinary – a "continental-sized lake under the rocks," as Karlstrom aptly described it.
