Park Place Cinema Reopens in Charleston, WV After Two-Year Closure
After nearly two years of darkness, Park Place Cinema in Charleston, West Virginia, is set to reopen its doors on April 1, 2026. The reopening marks a significant moment for the downtown Charleston community, restoring a beloved entertainment venue that closed in May 2024.
A Community Landmark Returns
The closure of Park Place Cinema in May 2024 was felt deeply by Charleston residents. Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin expressed the community’s sentiment, stating the closure felt like “the air all came out of us.” The 11-screen theater had been a staple of the city since opening in 1981, providing a gathering place for film enthusiasts and families for over four decades.
New Lease Agreement and City Support
The revival of Park Place Cinema is the result of a lease agreement between the city of Charleston and The Greater Charleston Theater Company and Entertainment Group. The Charleston City Council approved the agreement on Monday night, paving the way for the reopening. Under the terms of the lease, the city, which owns the building and adjoining parking garage on Washington Street East, will receive fifty cents from every movie ticket sold [MetroNews]. The city will also contribute to the final cleanup efforts in preparation for the April launch.
Plans for the Reopened Cinema
Robert Faulkner, Manager of The Greater Charleston Theater Company and Entertainment Group and co-owner Mike Tawney, saw an opportunity to bring the cinema back to life after witnessing the outpouring of support from the community. Faulkner, who began working at Park Place in 1993, emphasized their desire to restore a cherished space for residents [MetroNews].
The theater plans to open nine of its eleven screens to the public for regular movie screenings. The remaining two theaters will be available for private rentals, including for movie screenings and gaming events [WCHS].
A Positive Outlook for Charleston
Charleston Councilmember Emmett Pepper highlighted the importance of the reopening, stating it exemplifies how government should work – collaborating with local businesses and arts organizations to enhance the city’s appeal [MetroNews]. The return of Park Place Cinema is expected to contribute to the vibrancy of downtown Charleston and provide a valuable entertainment option for residents and visitors alike.
