In a move towards greater interoperability, Google’s Pixel 9 series will gain the ability to share files seamlessly with Apple devices via a feature mirroring Apple’s AirDrop. This functionality, extending to iPhones, iPads, and Macs, marks a significant step in bridging the gap between Android and iOS ecosystems.

How Cross-Platform File Sharing Works

When sending files from a Pixel 9 to an Apple device, the transfer will appear as an AirDrop request. On the Android side, the process utilizes Quick Share. For the transfer to succeed, the Apple device must be set to be discoverable by anyone, with an optional ten-minute time limit for this setting. Similarly, the Pixel 9 needs to be discoverable to all devices or set to receive mode. Once these conditions are met, a simple tap is all that’s required to accept the file transfer.

Pixel 9A Exclusion and Future Updates

Notably, the base model Pixel 9A will initially be excluded from this AirDrop-like functionality, requiring users to rely on traditional methods like Bluetooth for file sharing. Google communications manager Alex Moriconi indicated that the company is “looking forward to improving the experience and expanding it to more Android devices over time,” suggesting that the Pixel 9A may receive support in a future update.
