Son of Former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Arrested in South Africa
Johannesburg, South Africa – Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of the late former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe, was arrested in South Africa on Thursday following a shooting incident at his Johannesburg home. South African police confirmed the arrest, stating that two men are being held on charges of attempted murder.
Details of the Incident
According to South African police, an employee at Mugabe’s residence sustained a gunshot wound and is currently in critical condition. The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated, “The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage, and police investigations are under way.” Robert Mugabe died in Singapore in 2019.
Initial Reports and Arrest
Lawyer Ashley Mugiya, representing Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, confirmed that his client and another individual were initially detained for questioning. South African authorities have not yet released the names of the two suspects, consistent with standard procedure before a formal court appearance. Reports from South African national broadcaster SABC indicate the shooting occurred in a Johannesburg suburb.
Lack of Cooperation and Ongoing Investigation
Police reported that both suspects were initially uncooperative with investigators. “They have not told us where the gun is,” Colonel Nevhuhulwi said. “We cannot definitely say who shot.”
Family History of Legal Issues
The Mugabe family has faced several legal challenges in recent years. Robert Mugabe Jr., Bellarmine’s older brother, was fined $300 in Zimbabwe last year for possession of marijuana. In 2017, Grace Mugabe, Robert Mugabe’s second wife and the former First Lady of Zimbabwe, was accused of assaulting a model in Johannesburg with an electrical cord, though she later received diplomatic immunity.
Robert Mugabe’s Legacy
