Russia Accuses UK and France of Plotting to Provide Ukraine with Nuclear Weapons
Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has accused the United Kingdom and France of actively working to provide Ukraine with a nuclear bomb, a claim that has heightened international tensions. The allegations, made on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, suggest a significant escalation in Western support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Allegations of Nuclear Weapon Transfer
According to the SVR, Britain and France believe that arming Ukraine with nuclear capabilities would strengthen Kyiv’s position in negotiations to end the conflict. The SVR stated that Ukraine is being positioned to acquire a “wonder weapon,” with the potential to secure more favorable terms for a ceasefire if it possesses a nuclear or “dirty” bomb. Source
The intelligence service specifically mentioned the potential transfer of a French TN-75 compact warhead, designed for the M51.1 submarine-launched ballistic missile, as a possible option being considered. The SVR also noted that Germany declined to participate in this alleged scheme.
Violation of International Law
The SVR emphasized that such actions would constitute a “gross violation of international law,” particularly the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and could jeopardize the global non-proliferation regime. The service further alleges that Western nations are attempting to conceal their involvement by presenting the development of nuclear weapons in Ukraine as an indigenous effort. Source
Troop Deployment Plans
Separately, the UK and France signed a declaration of intent on January 6, 2026, to deploy troops to Ukraine if a peace deal with Russia is reached. The plan involves establishing military hubs across Ukraine to deter future invasion and regenerate Ukraine’s armed forces. Source
French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that thousands of troops could be deployed, even as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the deployment would secure Ukraine’s skies and seas. Source
As of February 22, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that both the UK and France are prepared to send international military contingents of approximately 5,000 personnel each – constituting one brigade from each country – following a ceasefire. Source
Russian Response
Russia has consistently warned that any foreign troops stationed in Ukraine would be considered “legitimate targets.” Moscow has yet to officially comment on the recent announcements regarding potential troop deployments. Source
Ongoing Conflict
The current conflict began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, resulting in Russia’s control over approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory. Source
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution.
