France and Indonesia: Strengthening Strategic Partnership through Defense Collaboration
As 2025 dawned, Indonesia and France celebrated a significant milestone: 75 years of diplomatic relations. This anniversary comes at a time when defense cooperation between the two nations has reached new heights, exemplified by the recent La Perouse exercise.
La Perouse Exercise: A Show of Force and Interoperability
As part of France’s mission Clemenceau 2025, the French Navy conducted the 5th edition of the La Perouse exercise from January 16th to 24th. This multinational naval exercise, involving Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States, focused on enhancing interoperability among partner nations in a complex strategic environment.
Featuring 13 warships from participating countries, the exercise centered around the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its Carrier Strike Group (CSG). The CSG comprised three frigates, alongside two French Navy Atlantic2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) stationed for a month at Kertajati Air Base in Subang, West Java.
The deployment of the Charles de Gaulle CSG marked an unprecedented moment with port visits to Gili Mas harbor in Lombok and Benoa Harbor in Bali. This significant presence underscored the importance of interoperability amongst diverse warships and the growing strategic collaboration between France and Indonesia.
Strengthening Ties Through High-Level Visits
Beyond the La Perouse exercise, France demonstrated its commitment to the Indo-Pacific region through a high-profile visit by Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu to Indonesia. During his three-day visit, Lecornu met with his Indonesian counterpart, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and President Prabowo Subianto.
The visit included a trip to Lombok, where Lecornu and Sjamsoeddin visited the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. Discussions focused on bolstering defense cooperation through joint exercises, personnel exchanges, and collaboration in weapon system production. This shared vision aims to benefit Indonesia through technology transfer (ToT) and job creation.
A Strategic Partnership for the Indo-Pacific
France views Indonesia as a crucial partner in ASEAN and regional diplomacy. Their extensive economic ties and France’s strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, encompassing its overseas territories and the 1.6 million French citizens residing there, further underscore the importance of this relationship.
The evolving partnership between France and Indonesia signifies a commitment to regional stability and security, promoting interoperability and shared prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
