Google Snapseed Gains Dedicated Camera Feature on iOS with Pro Controls and Film Emulation

Google has expanded the functionality of its popular photo editing app, Snapseed, on iOS with the full rollout of a dedicated camera feature. Initially soft-launched in December, the update brings a more integrated shooting experience, complete with professional manual controls and a suite of retro film emulation styles.

Easier Access to the Snapseed Camera

Previously, the Snapseed camera was only accessible through Lock Screen widgets, the Control Center, or Camera Control. Version 3.15.0 introduces a camera shortcut directly within the app interface, located in the top-right corner, streamlining access for users. [9to5Google]

Pro Controls for Advanced Users

The update introduces “Pro” controls, activated via a toggle in the top-left corner of the viewfinder. This unlocks manual adjustments for ISO, shutter speed, and focus, providing photographers with greater creative control over their images. A skeuomorphic dial allows for fine-tuning of these settings. [9to5Google] The flash and zoom controls have been repositioned to the bottom of the viewfinder for improved usability, particularly for one-handed operation.

Retro Film Emulation Styles

Snapseed’s camera feature offers real-time “film emulation” in eleven distinct styles, inspired by classic film stocks:

  • KP1: Kodak Portra 400
  • KP2: Kodak Portra 160
  • KG1: Kodak Gold 200
  • KE1: Kodak E200
  • FS1: Fuji Superia 200
  • FS2: Fuji Superia 800
  • FP1: Fuji Pro 400h
  • AG1: Agfa Optima 200
  • AS1: Agfa Scala 200
  • PD1: Polaroid 600
  • TC1: Technicolor

The app even features a rewind button animation when switching between these film styles, enhancing the retro aesthetic. [9to5Google]

Seamless Editing Workflow

Photos captured with the Snapseed camera integrate seamlessly with the app’s existing editing tools. Each image includes a full, editable stack, allowing users to revisit and refine their photos without any loss of quality. Android Users Still Waiting

Currently, the updated Snapseed interface and the new camera feature are exclusive to iOS users. Google has not yet announced a timeline for bringing these features to the Android version of the app. [TechRadar] Android users have not received a Snapseed update since May 2024. [TechRadar]
