Tragedy Strikes Mount Agung as South Korean National Found Dead in Ravine
A tragic incident unfolded on the slopes of Mount Agung, Bali’s sacred peak, as a South Korean national, identified as KDO, was found dead on Friday. KDO, a 31-year-old, was discovered at the bottom of a 100-meter-deep ravine, highlighting the inherent dangers of hiking Bali’s highest mountain without proper guidance.
Search and Rescue Efforts Yield Devastating Find
Rescue workers launched a search operation on Thursday after KDO was reported missing. A combined team of National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) personnel, Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Indonesian Military, Police, and local volunteers meticulously combed the area. After an extensive day-long search, the team tragically located KDO’s body.
“He was found dead, likely due to a fall into the 100-meter ravine. We will provide more details later. Currently, the team is still in the process of evacuation,” said I Gusti Ngurah Eka Wiadnyana, Coordinator of the Karangasem Search and Rescue (SAR) team.
Ignoring Safety Recommendations Led to Tragedy
Reports suggest that KDO embarked on his hike without a guide, defying safety recommendations for Mount Agung. I Wayan Suara Arsana, public relations officer of the Pura Pasar Agung shrine, revealed that KDO parked his rented motorcycle at the temple before starting his climb. Despite staff urging him to hire a guide, KDO chose to proceed alone.
Adding to the somber narrative, KDO reportedly contacted a friend in South Korea at 9:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, informing them that he was climbing a mountain in Bali at an altitude of 2,000 meters. The South Korean Consulate was also notified about KDO’s hike.
