What Drives Vripack’s Superyacht Design Philosophy?
Superyacht designers Bart Bouwhuis and Marnix Hoekstra of Vripack prioritize practicality over aesthetics, tailoring every detail to clients’ daily needs. “Ultimately, the object needs to fulfill the requirements of the day, the evening, and the night,” Bouwhuis told Business Insider. This approach extends beyond layout choices, such as outdoor cinemas or beach clubs, to include hidden technologies like stabilizers and noise-dampening insulation, which significantly impact comfort at sea.
How Are Health and Fitness Features Evolving in Superyachts?
Health and fitness have become central to Vripack’s designs, reflecting the priorities of the superrich. Clients now demand specialized spaces like Bikram-style hot yoga studios, kickboxing areas, and hyperbaric chambers for oxygen therapy. “You don’t walk a lot on a boat,” Hoekstra explained. “A treadmill or bike, both of them are very nice pieces of equipment to keep your muscles going.” The Al Waab, a 55-meter superyacht, features a gym designed to accommodate these modern wellness trends, despite challenges like ceiling height and climate control.
Why Is “Work From Yacht” Reshaping Superyacht Design?
The rise of remote work has transformed superyachts into hybrid spaces for business and leisure. Vripack’s Project Milky Ways includes two dedicated office spaces, catering to clients who view their yachts as extensions of their professional lives. “Life is blurring between private and business,” Hoekstra noted. Starlink’s satellite internet has made high-speed video calls at sea feasible, further supporting this shift. Younger, tech-savvy owners—less likely to be retirees—are driving demand for these flexible, work-friendly layouts.
How Are Superyachts Improving Comfort and Stability?
Vripack leverages advanced technology to enhance stability and comfort. Modern stabilizers reduce seasickness, while computational models allow designers to tailor systems to specific sailing regions, such as the Mediterranean. Bouwhuis and Hoekstra also focus on minimizing motion’s impact on sleep, strategically placing master cabins to reduce discomfort. “It’s a little bit of a paradox,” Hoekstra said. “Since the beginning of mankind, we want to be out at the sea, and we don’t want to move.”
What Role Does Sustainability Play in Vripack’s Designs?
Sustainability is reshaping superyacht construction, with Vripack leading the charge. Project Zero, set to launch in 2023, is the first all-electric superyacht powered entirely by renewable energy. Clients are also adopting eco-friendly practices, such as using heat-reflective paint and energy-efficient AC systems that shut off when rooms are unoccupied. “It doesn’t really make sense not to do it,” Hoekstra said of alternatives to teak decking, which is being phased out due to deforestation concerns. These changes reflect a shift from avoiding environmentalism to pursuing “low-hanging fruit” in sustainability.
