Tether to Issue USD ₮ on Bitcoin Using RGB protocol
Lugano, Switzerland (ots/PRNewswire)
The StableCoin giant Tether has committed to issuing USD ₮ on Bitcoin and Lightning using the RGB technology in the near future.
Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether: “With RGB, USD ₮ receives a powerful new way on Bitcoin.”
Tether announced its intention today to launch USD ₮ on RGB, a next-generation protocol for the issuance and transaction of digital assets on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. The RGB Protocol Association welcomes the announcement as a strong signal for developers and institutions looking for private, scalable, and user-controlled asset rails in the world’s safest network.RGB reached the publication of version V0.11.1 earlier this year, achieving mainnet readiness, allowing developers to output and manage Bitcoin as commitment layers with the help of client-side validation. This design keeps asset data off-chain while linking evidence of Bitcoin transactions – minimizing blockchain bloat, enhancing privacy, and enabling Lightning compatibility.
“Bitcoin deserves a stablecoin that feels truly native, lightweight, private, and scalable,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “with RGB, USD ₮ receives a powerful new way on Bitcoin, which confirms our conviction that Bitcoin is the foundation for a freer financial future.”
With USD ₮ on RGB, users and service providers will be able to:
Hold and transfer USD ₮ alongside Bitcoin in the same wallet;
Use private, client-validated transactions that do not disclose balances or movements on the blockchain;
* Integrate with the Lightning Network to achieve instant settlement results with RGB’s speed.
Why This Matters
RGB extends Bitcoin beyond a pure investment, enabling stablecoins, tokenized assets, and programmable rights that leverage Bitcoin’s security model while maintaining user control. Adoption by large issuers like tether can foster wallet support, merchant acceptance, and cross-chain liquidity bridges.
Tether to launch USDT on RGB Protocol, Expanding Bitcoin Stablecoin Support
Tether, the company behind the widely-used USDT stablecoin, has announced plans to launch USDT on the RGB protocol, a new development aimed at expanding native Bitcoin stablecoin support. https://tether.io/news/tether-to-launch-usdt-on-rgb-expanding-native-bitcoin-stablecoin-support/ This move will leverage the RGB protocol to build and issue stablecoins directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, and possibly on the Lightning Network.
The RGB protocol allows for the creation of assets directly on the Bitcoin blockchain without requiring separate sidechains or layer-2 solutions. This approach aims to enhance scalability and reduce reliance on trusted third parties. https://rgb.info/ The protocol utilizes a novel approach to smart contracts, enabling complex financial instruments to be built directly on Bitcoin. https://github.com/rgb-protocol
According to the announcement, this integration will contribute to the growth of native stablecoins on Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, fostering greater financial innovation within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
