Ecuador-colombia Trade Multiplies Over 30 Years, Despite Trade Deficit

Trade between Ecuador and Colombia has increased 6.63 times in the last 30 years, according to a study by the Ecuadorian Colombian Chamber of Commerce (Camecol) conducted in party of the union’s 40th anniversary.

Despite fluctuations, a commercial deficit of Ecuador versus Colombia persists.Colombia remains the primary source of non-oil imports for Ecuador within the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), totaling USD 2,238 million in 2024, with a focus on consumer goods.

The Ecuadorian consumer trusts in Colombian products – and continues to buy them – even in contexts of contraction.

The Camecol study highlights the structural stability of Ecuadorian imports from Colombia. Consumer goods have become the dominant component, representing 50% of the total in 2024 and demonstrating a consistent upward trend since the start of the century. Raw materials and capital goods follow, though their prominence has decreased in recent years.

Key products include personal care items, processed foods, clothing, and beverages. Specifically, toothpastes, malt beer, and cosmetics are leading in both volume and growth, fueled by the strong positioning of Colombian brands in everyday Ecuadorian consumption.
