Trump Announces Increased Tariffs Following Supreme Court Ruling

US President Donald Trump has announced he will raise the fresh global tariff rate to 15 percent, up from 10 percent, a day after the US Supreme Court struck down his initial tariff policy. This move comes as the Trump administration seeks alternative legal avenues to impose trade restrictions.

Background of the Tariff Dispute

Trump initially signed a proclamation enacting a temporary 10 percent duty on imports under section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act. This act allows the president to impose import restrictions for up to 150 days. The initial tariffs were implemented after the Supreme Court ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs on numerous countries.

Trump’s Response and Future Plans

In a social media post, Trump stated the increase to 15 percent is “fully allowed, and legally tested.” He further indicated that the administration will determine and issue new, legally permissible tariffs in the coming months. The announcement signals a continued commitment to trade protectionist measures despite legal challenges.

“During the next short number of months, the Trump administration will determine and issue the new legally permissible tariffs,” Trump stated.
