Uber and Amazon’s Zoox Partner to Expand Robotaxi Services
Uber is expanding its autonomous vehicle network through a new multiyear partnership with Amazon’s Zoox, bringing self-driving taxis to more riders. The collaboration will initially launch in Las Vegas this summer, with plans to extend to Los Angeles by mid-2027. This marks Zoox’s first partnership with a third-party ride-hailing provider.
Robotaxi Rollout: Las Vegas and Los Angeles
Starting this summer, Uber users in Las Vegas will be able to book rides in Zoox’s distinctive, box-shaped autonomous vehicles directly through the Uber app. The service will similarly continue to be available through the Zoox app. Expansion to Los Angeles is slated for mid-2027, offering residents and visitors another autonomous transportation option as reported by CNBC.
Zoox and Uber: A Strategic Alliance
This partnership allows Amazon’s Zoox to tap into Uber’s extensive rider base and established platform, accelerating the deployment of its autonomous technology. Uber, in turn, strengthens its position in the rapidly evolving robotaxi market without needing to independently develop its own self-driving vehicles. Uber executives have positioned their platform as the ideal avenue for autonomous vehicle manufacturers to reach a wider audience .
Zoox’s Expansion and Technology
While currently trailing Waymo in the U.S. Robotaxi market – Waymo has surpassed 400,000 weekly rides across six metro areas – Zoox is actively expanding its operational footprint. Beyond Las Vegas and San Francisco, Zoox announced plans to extend testing to Dallas, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, and establish a new vehicle operations control center in Arizona .
Zoox differentiates itself with its purpose-built, fully autonomous vehicles, designed specifically for ride-hailing. These vehicles lack traditional driver controls like steering wheels and pedals . The company has accumulated over 1 million autonomous driving miles and served more than 300,000 users .
Uber’s Broader Autonomous Vehicle Strategy
Uber’s partnership with Zoox is part of a larger strategy to become a major player in the autonomous vehicle space. The company has already partnered with 25 companies developing self-driving technology and operates in cities including Phoenix, Austin, and Dubai. Uber aims to expand its autonomous vehicle operations to 15 cities globally by the end of 2026 and become the world’s largest robotaxi operator by 2029 .
Future Implications
The collaboration between Uber and Zoox signals growing confidence in the viability and expansion of autonomous mobility. As robotaxi technology matures, it has the potential to significantly reshape the ridesharing landscape, potentially accounting for 10% of all rideshares by 2030 . This partnership represents a significant step towards a future where self-driving taxis are a common mode of transportation.
